The history of commonwealth games goes back to 1930 when a sporting event was planned to establish cordial relationship among the British ruled states. The first game was held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with more than 400 athletes from eleven countries exhibiting their sporting talent. The event was held under different names like British Empire Games, Friendly Games and British Commonwealth Games. From 1978, it was renamed as only Commonwealth Games. Next to Olympics, Commonwealth is the biggest sporting event in the world held once in every four years. So far 18 Commonwealth Games have been conducted. The honor of hoisting the 19th event has been offered to India. The mega sports extravaganza will be held in Jawaharlal stadium in New Delhi. It will be serving as the biggest platform for the athletes from all the Commonwealth nations to showcase their talent. India is hoisting this prestigious event for the first time since its inception and for the entire of Asia this will be the second time after 1998 event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Interestingly the other big offer was from Hamilton, Canada were the first event was held. India won the final bid with a margin of 46 to 22 with a logo of New Frontiers and Friendship.
The event has come at a significant price to India. In return the nation needs to give US$100000 to all the participating nations. All the facilities like air fare, boarding, stay and transport needs to be taken care for all the participants. The expenditure for the event is expected to go up considerably as the entire Delhi infrastructure needs to be upgraded. Even the staff, including the drivers is being trained to handle the English speaking foreign tourists. The Queen’s Baton Relay was held in October 2009. The sports events are being held in all the important stadiums in Delhi. The Logo for the Delhi Commonwealth Games is “Green Commonwealth Games” and the mascot is Shera. All the popular games such as athletics, archery, boxing, hockey etc are expected to be played in the mega sporting event which is a pride to all the Indians.
