A snapshot at the Earlier editions of the Commonwealth Games

The history of the Commonwealth Games dates back to the early era of the 1930’s when the initial edition of this sporting event started as the British Empire Games where only 11 countries participated. But due to the sudden outbreak of the Second World War, the quadrennial timings of the 1942 Commonwealth games set in Canada, Montreal was intervened and deserted for this reason. The 1942 games event was again sustained in 1950 and just after this event in 1954 its name was changed into the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. It was in 1958 that over thousands of participants took part in this event with more than 30 teams who had participated for the very first time.

In the 1970-1974 editions, the sports event was temporarily named as the British Commonwealth Games and eventually the 1978 edition that took place in Edmonton, Canada was first conducted under the name of the ‘Commonwealth Games’. This Edmonton episode marked the foundation of the prestigious Commonwealth games and started a new journey of world sports event with over 1500 sports personalities participating from 46 nations across the world. Years after the successful initiation of the Commonwealth Games, the 1986 edition of this event was affected by an embargo that was created by the Caribbean and African countries against the participation of New Zealand. This was followed by the South African All Blacks Rugby Tour in 1995 of the era of Apartheid, but nothing could stop the Commonwealth to grow and it continued with full flair thereafter.

The next season of the Commonwealth Games was held in 1998 in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in which teams sports were raised from 10 to 15 for the very first time. The participating levels were also high with 3500 sports persons representing 70 teams from all over the world. In the recent Commonwealth Games edition held in Melbourne, Australia the numbers of participants were around 4000 that truly shows the level of this event. In recent times, 3 of the nations who have hosted this event includes New Zealand (3), Canada (4) and Australia (4), with further editions that took place in the UK (5), Edinburgh (2) and Auckland (2).
