Talk of the town- The Commonwealth Games
The whole world is going gaga over the new buzz- The Commonwealth Games which is being scheduled this year in the national capital of India, New Delhi. One would definitely like to get a snapshot at the Commonwealth Games, which is a multinational sports event held first in 1930 with the title of ‘British Empire Games’ but further named in 1954 as ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’ and in 1970 as ‘British Commonwealth Games’ and eventually gained its present label in 1978.
Some of the most elite sports people from all over the world are involved in this event. All the participants are active associates of the Commonwealth of Nations. This sports event is ranked 3rd in the world just after the Asian Games and the Summer Olympics and takes place after every 4 years.
The Commonwealth Games features some exclusive games like the netball, lawn bowls and rugby sevens. All the sports events as well as the programming are controlled and run by the Commonwealth Games Federation who is also responsible for the selection of the host city. So far teams from Australia, Wales, England, Scotland, Canada and New Zealand have participated in this majestic event.
At present there are 54 ‘Commonwealth of Nations’ members and 71 participating teams in this event out of which four of the home teams of the UK- Northern Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland participate in the event separately. Other teams that participate separately in the Commonwealth Games include Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey and other oversees territory of the British state.
The external territory of Australia, Norfolk Island also participates separately in this event along with Niue and Cook Islands which are free associates of New Zealand. It is also being talked about that another dependent territory of New Zealand, Tokelau will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games 2010 which is being held in New Delhi, India. The Commonwealth Games is truly a grandeur which the whole world eagerly awaits to witness.
