Tourist spots in New Delhi
New Delhi, the national capital of India, is home to a number of tourist spots and heritage monuments. Places like the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Parliament, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutab Minar, India Gate, Humayun’s tomb and Birla Temple form the major sources of attraction for the tourists.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan situated on Raisina Hills near the Rajpath is now the home to the President of India. Before Independence it housed the Viceroy. E Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker were instrumental in building it. The Red Fort is a gigantic monument that recalls the glory of the past during the reign of the Mughal Empire. It is built of sandstone and huge walls have been built to thwart invasions from foreign rulers during erstwhile period. The Jama Masjid is the largest mosque of India. It is also built of red sandstone. The structure was built by Shah Jahan. The Qutab Minar is a grandiloquent tower built to commemorate the victory of Qutub-ud-din Aibak over Delhi. It also represents the victory of Islamic rulers over the annihilation of the kingdom of Hindus. The tower has verses of Quran engraved all over it. One of the brilliant examples of the architecture of the Mughals is the Humayun Tomb. It is said that the Taj Mahal at Agra is precedent to this magnificent structure.
The Birla Temple or the Laxminarayan Temple at Delhi is a colossal structure built by Vir Singh Deo in 1622 with goddess Laxmi and Lord Narayan as the presiding deities. The temple belongs to the Birla family and hence the name. The India gate was designed by E Lutyens and was previously known as All India War Memorial. The memorial was made to commemorate the sacrifices made by the Indian Army under the British rule. It also has the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a flame to which the heads of different countries pay homage while making a visit to India.
