About UGC NET Exam
NET or National Eligibility Test is the entrance exam conducted at national level by UGC for the post graduate candidates wishing to apply for teaching jobs in various universities or colleges in India. It is wholly administered by University Grant Commission, a government organization set up by Union Government in 1956 for keeping a check on standards of various universities and colleges. UGC conducts NET exam for granting Junior Research Fellowship to Indian citizens and for determining minimum eligibility for lectureship for the candidates who want to enter into the teaching profession and/or research.
The NET exams are conducted for various subjects including social sciences, humanities (including languages), forensic science, computer science and application, environmental science and electronic science. UGC also conducts NET exam with the help of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for other science subjects like life sciences, chemical sciences, physical sciences, mathematical sciences and ocean and planetary sciences. NET exams are conducted twice every year, normally in December and June. The test of JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) test is being conducted since 1984. In July 1988, Indian Government made UGC responsible for conducting the eligibility test. Soon after that, UGC conducted first National Eligibility Test which took place in two parts, first for eligibility of lectureship and second for awarding JRF.
All the information related to NET exam is published from time to time on the UGC website. You can also download all the rules, eligibility criterion or any other notification in PDF format which will help you in getting all the required knowledge about NET. Some months back, many teacher unions were protesting against it. Because they were thinking that this is against their rights. But the issue was solved soon by UGC after stating that this test will not be cancelled.
