Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), and the related National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) are a group of premier institutes being created by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) (MHRD), to promote education and research in the sciences. Five IISER's have been currently planned across the country in the following locations -- Kolkata in West Bengal, Pune in Maharashtra, Mohali in Punjab, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The financial outlay for each IISER is around Rs 500 crore for the first five years. The NISER is being set up in Bhubaneswar for a slightly higher outlay of 800 crores.

An exciting opportunity in science for inquisitive young minds

Scientific and technological innovations are the key drivers for growth and economic prosperity of a nation. In the 21st century, as basic and applied sciences converge, there is an immediate need to train competent researchers. Towards this, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India has set up 5 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram at a cost of Rs. 500 crores each.

How do I get admission to the BS-MS dual degree programme in IISERs?

To seek an admission, you should apply through at least one of the three channels.

(a) KVPY : (SA(2009)/SX(2010)/SB(2010)/SP(Passed 10+2 in 2010/2011)

(b) IIT-JEE: (Rank in regular merit list & 60 % marks in class XII)

(c ) State/Central Board: Class XII in 2010 &2011; Class X in 2008, 2009; Cut-off % is available in DST website (http://www.inspire-dst.gov.in/Inspire-Advertisement.pdf).

Note: For OBC (non-creamy) a 5% relaxation of the DST cut-off is tenable. The cut-off for SC/ST is 60% in Class X and Class XII for all boards. All state/central board students must also qualify in the IISER Science Aptitude Test (ISAT).
